Right click is your friend

March 28th, 2007 by John

We work hard to make radius easy to use. A great feature some of you should try is the wonderful right click. Try right clicking on a friend in your friend list. You’ll see a menu that lets you do pretty much everything like showing them on the map or displaying your logs. Also right click someone in the map window. There are even more cool things there like ‘zoom to location’ which will take you to an approximate location for a local.

Happy right clicking.

Idle and Nicks!

March 19th, 2007 by John

Some of you may have noticed that a few new treats entered the friend list this week. We’ve been working hard on some of your big requests and now they’ve arrived.

First, you’ll see that an icon shows up now for friends that have gone idle. And on the AIM network you can see how long your friends have been online. The big one, though, is nicknames on MSN. The days of long email addresses in the friend list are over.

Idlewild

We’ve also made some nice login improvements that will make getting on the site much faster.

Hope everyone enjoys the new features.

Pool Table - For Make Benefit Glorious Company of radiusIM

March 8th, 2007 by Zohar

Ok, so we got a pool table at the office. But don’t think bubble-era dot com excess, it’s just that I’m having a kid and my wife said the pool table had to go. So what better place than the office? This should make happy hours at the office more fun anyway.  Now let’s see how much work we can get done.

Hi, Hola, Olá, Bonjour, Ni Hao…

March 2nd, 2007 by John

People from over 40 countries visit radius every day. Big contingents log in from the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, the United Kingdom, India, France, China, the Phillipines and so many more. It’s really exciting and rewarding for us to see this and lets us know in a big way that we need to translate the site. We’re going to start a project to get this done and could use a little help. Look for a posting on this effort soon and please give us a hand!

In the meantime, take advantage of the big international community on radius by moving that map around and saying a quick hello to someone from another country. As a quick refresher, you can move the map by clicking and dragging on it. A good way to surf to another country is to first zoom the map out a few levels by clicking the little ‘-’ icon in the map and then dragging it.

Have fun! Ciao….

Speed and more speed

February 23rd, 2007 by John

Radius has come a long way since we went live and we remain committed to improving it. Driving our decisions has always been you guys - the users. Requests for new features come in often and this really helps us.

The big request these days is to make radius faster. Everything from loading the page, to logging in, to moving the map. We are going to focus heavily on this in the coming weeks so you can all have a snappier user experience.

Help us prioritize. Drop us a comment on where you’d like to see the most improvement. This type of feedback is really valuable for us!

Thanks everyone and we’ll keep you all updated on progress.

Very nice, very nice…

February 16th, 2007 by John

Now that you’ve eaten all your chocolates and enjoyed your lovely roses, here’s a ‘very nice’ gift from radius. This release has three very cool features you’ve all been asking for.

First off, we wired radius so you can see when your friends on AIM, MSN and Yahoo are receiving IMs on their mobile phones. Always good info to know when you’re about to send a message. Check out Borat below. He’s continuing his world tour, but still receiving IMs on his phone.

Borat on mobile

Next, we’ve spruced up the IM logs window and fixed some logging bugs. It’s way slicker and has full text search capability. So, start logging those IMs. All you have to do is go to the settings window and check the ‘log all my IMs’ box. You can get to those logs by clicking the logs icon shown below as well as right clicking on a friend and selecting ’show log.’

Log Window

Lastly, you can now save your password. So, the next time you visit radius, you’ll be automatically logged in. Just click the save password box and you’ll be IMing that much faster.

Thanks for all the support and let us know if you have any ideas to make radius even better.

Upgrade time…

February 9th, 2007 by John

With all the increased traffic we’re seeing we wanted to be proactive and upgrade some of radius’ infrastructure. To get it all done we’re taking a bit of downtime on Saturday, February 10th from 6:00 AM EST to 12:00 PM EST. Good news is radius will be more stable and we’ll sleep a little more soundly at night :-).

Thanks everyone for your patience and we’ll be back up around noon eastern time so be sure to check back then.

Stumbling around (without drinking beers)

February 5th, 2007 by Zohar

We’ve been getting some traffic lately from StumbleUpon, so I’d thought I’d give them a plug because it’s a neat idea and helps get the word out about cool new sites w/o having to BCC your whole crew. It’s up there on my list of things to do to waste time at work/school…

RadiusIM has a page up there (as does every site I guess); slap a review of us up there or maybe a thumbs-up if you wish :) http://www.stumbleupon.com/url/www.radiusim.com/.

And completely unrelated, here’s the first in our “Subway Series” shots. I think this was our party invite to our first happy hour at Piano’s(?):

It’s all about the tunes

January 31st, 2007 by John

We spend a lot of time at our offices in the Lower East Side.  Much of it involves thinking through new product features, enhancing existing ones and squashing those annoying bugs.  To keep us all entertained throughout the long hours, we rely on our trusty jukebox.   It’s a piece of software called PlayerPal that plugs into iTunes and gives you browser access to all your music.  Themes for each day are beginning to form, but for the most part we take our chances with the shuffle feature.

Stuff we’re pretty into these days include:  The Shins, Flaming Lips, TV on the Radio, Whitest Boy Alive, Hot Chip and too many others to mention.  If anyone has some suggestions on new stuff, please chime in.

Oh sweet…

January 26th, 2007 by John

Our last release a few weeks ago was pretty huge and today we offer up even more love. This release marks a big step towards enhancing our IM feature set with a really sweet Friend Overlay. Mousing over your friends now loads an overlay featuring the user’s pic, their distance away from you (radius friends), status and any away messages. You’ll also see that nicknames are coming very soon too!

Friend Overlay

Along with the overlay we’ve fixed some bugs and further improved stability. And if you’re here, you noticed that we have a blog link on the page now. So check back often and post some comments so we can get more feedback.
